Late to the Party (AKA Content I Wish I Consumed Earlier)

Don’t you hate the feeling that you’re missing out on something that the rest of the world seems to be loving? Are you afraid of FOMO and are literally willing to put your life on hold to catch up and feel in the know? Well, same here!

Because we live in a world where every day, more books and shows and movies are added to our endless achieve, there’s no way we’ll ever be able to consume it all. AND THAT MAKES ME SO SAD. So in order to combat that feeling, I’ve been known to binge entire shows in a day, dedicate my life to watching a series before the final episode is released, and even becoming so obsessed with a franchise I start to dress like the characters.

Even though I’m endlessly trying to play catch up, there are always shows and books and films that I just don’t get around to for AGES. So today I’m going to be sharing some of the content I wish I’d discovered earlier – and what I thought of it! Enjoy!

Star Wars

I KNOW. I KNOW. I’m the worst nerd there ever was (just kidding). But I’m honestly super disappointed in myself that I never watched Star Wars up until a month ago! Everyone was super hyped about the last film coming out and I was like “hmm, maybe I should give those a go so I can see it in the cinema as well”. In short: I hate FOMO. So I sat down and watched all eight films — so I could watch the ninth — and now I’m full on OBSESSED. Like, head-over-heels for every single character, currently in the midst of watching The Mandalorian and The Clone Wars OB.SESSED. I only wish I’d started watching Star Wars as a kid! As a massive fan of Doctor Who, I know I would have loved it. Without a doubt.

Game of Thrones

THIS IS ANOTHER THING I FELT LIKE THE WHOLE WORLD HAD WATCHED EXCEPT ME. And it was hard not to feel that way when the last season was being released last year! I hadn’t watched a single episode until FOMO got the better of me and I decided I’d be caught up by the time the last episode was released. I BINGED EIGHT SEASONS IN SIX WEEKS, Y’ALL. And then my whole work fam sat down and watched the finale together in the cinema and it was THE BEST. There’s nothing I love more than feeling a part of a new community, and finally — FINALLY — I could understand all the memes! All the references! And yep, I’m completely and utterly in love with Arya Stark.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Seriously, what the hell was I doing when I was a kid? Clearly rewatching Doctor Who endlessly and not knowing Buffy was a thing. That’s what. One reason why I probably didn’t watch Buffy until a year ago was because it was IMPOSSIBLE to find! Literally! I had do go back to the Dark Ages and borrow DVDS to consume this glorious content. And my god, it was phenomenal. I’m STILL NOT OVER ALL THE DEATHS. Ahh! I know I would have loved this show when I was younger as well because Buffy is just such a badass female role model and I feel like we all needed more of that growing up. THIS SHOW IS THE BEST.

Firefly

Yep, after binging Buffy the Vampire Slayer, clearly I continued on my Whedon journey with Firefly. This was a show I’d never even heard of before my friend recommended it to me, but as soon as I started watching it, I couldn’t get enough of it. WHICH WAS CLEARLY A PROBLEM, SEEING AS THEY ONLY MADE ONE SEASON. The characters were just incredible, the plot was fun and fast-paced, and I found myself clicking “NEXT EPISODE” frantically at 2am on multiple occasions. WHAT A SHOW!

Scythe

I can’t believe I waited so long to read Scythe that the THIRD BOOK was released before I finally dove into it! Normally I’m totally on top of all the new releases, but I think Scythe must have slipped under my radar. And wow, it was absolutely incredible. I almost thing I enjoyed my reading experience of this series MORE because I got to binge them and didn’t have to wait a year or more to find out what happened. So often I just leave a series at the first book because I’m too lazy to reread it before the release of the next one, but luckily that wasn’t a problem for Scythe! I literally haven’t stopped thinking about it. If you like dystopian stories with twists that’ll keep you reading into the early hours of the morning, you have to pick up this series!

The Graveyard Book

It’s not just The Graveyard Book that I wish I read earlier… it’s the entirety of Neil Gaiman’s work. I know. I KNOW. I hadn’t read a single one of his books until last year! BUT I’M SLOWLY CHANGING IT. The Graveyard Book was the first one I read, and I’m working my way through his entire collection. I think I’m going to read some of his comics next — and of course, I need to read Good Omens after ADORING the show! I can’t believe I didn’t think to go off and read his work after loving his episode on Doctor Who… *tut-tut*. I’m disappointed in me too. But I know I’ve got so many exciting things of his to look forward to! Eep!

lets-talk

Have you seen or read any of the things I’ve mentioned? What are some things that you discovered later than most, and loved? What hyped series or shows do you still need to consume? I’d love to know!

  1. Buffy is one of my favourite TV series. I pretty much try to get everyone I know into it because it’s so amazing. So I’m always super excited when I hear new people have fallen in love with it. Have you seen Angel? If not, you should! Season four is a bit dodgy but the others are fantastic.
I love almost everything on this list (I haven’t read The Graveyard Book), but I’ll be forever bitter about the final season of GoT.

  2. I still love Buffy with all of my heart. I tend to rewatch it every 12-18 months.
I absolutely understand the feeling of “why didn’t I get to this sooner??” though. But once I’ve started, it’s so good to just be in the know of what is happening.

  3. Oh you have a great list, Sarah! I didn’t grew up with Star Wars either, I only started watching them after Rogue One! I’m a bit sad because it feels like I missed the OG feel, but at the same time I’m glad I am new to the fandom as I was really disappointed in TRoS 😭 I really want to watch Buffy, I’m pretty sure it could be a new favorite for me!

  4. I’ve never watched an episode of Game of Thrones and I didn’t grow up with Star Wars either. I’m still not bothered about Game of Thrones but when Disney + comes to the UK in March I will be using it to watch both Star Wars and all the Avengers films as I’m finally in the mood to watch them. Buffy is a difficult one for me because I should like it, but when I did watch the first two seasons I wasn’t that fussed. Then again, I was in the middle of a Charmed phase so Buffy had no effect on me whatsoever.

    • Ooh yes, Disney+ is so great! That’s honestly the only reason why I’m watching all the Star Wars films now 🙌🏻 Aww no, I’m sorry to hear you weren’t totally in love with BUFFY. I really, really need to check out CHARMED! 😍

  5. Better late than never!!! And I am totally the same way! I binge watched the entire last season of Game of Thrones the day the last episode was released in order to catch up before the final episode 🤣🤣 And welcome to the Star Wars and Firefly fandoms ❤ They are two of my favorites!

  6. I just read Scythe last year and was blown away. I was also super glad that I was able to binge that and Thunderhead and then didn’t have to wait too long before the Toll came out, because otherwise I fear I might have exploded from impatience.
